HAND POINTS
22.02 Double Fairy - Chong Xian:- • Acute neck sprain: Needle 22.01-22.02 Double Child/Double Fairy on the opposite side with REN24 Cheng Jiang; usually, one treatment is enough. If the onset is sudden, REN24 Cheng Jiang may be enough. For immediate relief, rotate the neck every 10 minutes while the needles are retained (Active Qi Moving). • Chronic neck pain: As a substitute for 77.01-77.02 Correct Tendons, we can bilaterally needle 22.01-22.02 Double Child/Double Fairy, adding REN24 as an immediate fix for neck pain. This is typically done only when the Achilles tendon has been compromised. 22.01-22.02 Double Child/Double Fairy with PC6 Nei Guan is another option. (In classical Chinese medical literature, neck pain is considered a Jue Yin problem.) • Hand pain: If the patient has difficulty opening and closing the hands, sedate or bleed 33.16 Curve Mound (LUS) on the same side, and then needle 22.01-22.02 Double Child/Double Fairy on the opposite side. For joint pain in the fingers, carpal tunnel syndrome, and rheumatoid arthritis, we can also needle SJ5 Wai Guan as part of the Yang Wei Mai. • Thenar eminence pain: Needle opposite side: 22.01-22.02 Double Child/Double Fairy, 22.04-22.05 Ling Gu/Da Bai, SJ5 Wai Guan and 33.04 Fire Threaded (SJ6), or 22.11 Earth Water. These points are all effective for hand pain. • Pneumonia, cough, asthma, or lung problems in children: For children five years old or younger, quickly insert and remove the needles at 22.01-22.02 Double Child/Double Fairy, without retention, or bleed the Si Feng (Extra Points). These kids may also need upper back cupping, Shoni-shin Japanese pediatric techniques, and/ or spinal roll (starting at the bottom, roll the skin up the spine). Children older than five years can retain needles (with a good storybook); with them, I may use 88.17-88.19 Four Horses with A.04 San Cha Three or Dr. Miriam Lee's Ten Great Needles. Kids of all ages can be cupped, slowly and carefully; the practitioner must adjust the pressure to tolerance. A.O5 Small Joint - Xiao Jie:- • Ankle pain: Needle opposite side A.OS Xiao Jie. Sometimes I combine it with local bleeding or magnets. 22.03 Upper White - Shang Bai:- • Eye diseases: Combine 22.03 Upper White with bleeding 99.08 Ear Apex for redness of the canthus; combine with A.04 Three Jam Three for soreness and distension of the eyes; combine with 88.12-88.14 Three Yellows and 11.17 Wood (Anger) for itching of the eyes (Dr. Young). • Twisted back (sudden): Needle 22.03 Upper White with 001 Hand Golden Gate. This is especially good for middle back and waist pain. 001 Hand Golden Gate - Men Jin7 :- • Acute lumbar strain: 22.07 Lower White (Xia Bai), 001 Hand Golden Gate; 22.03 Shang Bai, 001 Hand Golden Gate. • Cramping gallbladder pain: 001 Hand Golden Gate, needled with 22.07 Lower White (Xia Bai) and Dan Nang Xue (Extra Point located 1-2.0 cun inferior to GB34 Yang Ling Quan), treats cramping gallbladder pain (due to gallstones). • Urinary stones: 001 Hand Golden Gate with 22.07 Lower White (Xia Bai) relieves the pain of kidney stones or gallbladder stones. Add 1010.13 Horse Gold Water (kidney stone), 1010.14 Horse Fast Water (bladder stone), and 1010.16 Six Fast for stones in the urethra. Add 11.17 Wood (Anger) for burning urine due to anger. 002 Divided White - Fen Bai8 :- • Frozen shoulder: 22.04-22.05 Ling Gu/Da Bai, 002 Fen Bai. See 77.08 Four Flawer Upper, extensive commentary. 22.04 Great White - Da Bai:- • Common cold with headache: 22.04 Da Bai, A.04 San Cha Three. • Sciatica (UB, GB, SP and ST): 22.04-22.05 Ling Gu/Da Bai. • Groin pain: 22.04-22.05 Ling Gu/Da Bai, 33.12 Heart Gate. • Tennis elbow: 22.04-22.05 Ling Gu/Da Bai. • Dizziness: 22.04-22.05 Ling Gu/Da Bai. • Facial twitch: This is common after Bell's palsy or excessive stress. Use 22.04 Da Bai, 77.22-77.23 Beside Three Miles. • Trigeminal neuralgia: The middle branch of the trigeminal nerve is the most commonly affected area and can be difficult to resolve. Use 22.04 Da Bai and S13 Hou Xi, because SI3 links to Sl18 Quan Liao and the middle branch of the trigeminal nerve, while 22.04 Da Bai goes to the Yang Ming area (LI/ST) - the middle and lower branches of the nerve. Stimulate one needle on each side, or use all four for a stronger treatment, while the patient simultaneously moves their face (Active Qi Moving). Also consider 77.08-77.09 Four Flower Upper/ Four Flower Middle. • Shao Yang branch: Use A.04 San Cha Three or 22.06 Zhong Bai to treat the upper branch of the trigeminal nerve, as Shao Yang relates to the side of the face. Additionally, for Shao Yang-type trigeminal neuralgia, use 77.05-77.07 Three Weights, 77.22-77.23 Beside Three Miles (or 66.06-66.07 Wood Keep/Wood Scoop though less effective), adding 77.18 Kidney Gate (Shen Guan) for chronic cases. You may also bleed the Tai Yang area, being careful to avoid the artery. • Herbs: Trigeminal neuralgia can be excruciatingly painful and may require narcotics. Wu Gong (centipede), Quan Xie (scorpion) and Jiang Can (silk worm) are all very useful in relieving severe pain due to wind, restoring normal flow of qi in all channels and collaterals, neutralizing toxins and dispersing nodules. Extremely small doses of each are used. 1.5 qian Quan Xie (scorpion) can be added to San Pien Tang in cases of unbearable pain.11 • Insomnia: 22.04 Da Bai, 66.03 Fire Hardness (Tung' s LV2); this treatment is also known as Anxiety Four Gates or Fire Four Gates. • Frequent urination: 22.04-22.05 Ling Gu/Da Bai, 77.18-77.21 Three Emperors. • Painful urination: 22.04-22.05 Ling Gu/Da Bai, 11.17 Wood (Anger), 1010.13-1010.14 Horse Fast Water /Horse Gold Water. Consider 114/L V3 Four Gates. • Spinal pain: 22.04-22.05 Ling Gu/Da Bai. Consider bleeding UB40 Wei Zhong. • Ischial nerve pain: 22.04-22.05 Ling Gu/ Da Bai. 22.05 Spirit Bone - Ling Gu:- • Confused mental state: 22.04-22.05 Ling Gu/Da Bai, Lill Qu Chi, 77.18- 77.21 Three Emperors. • Dizziness: 22.04-22.05 Ling Gu/Da Bai, add Lill Qu Chi (if due to Large Intestine/ Liver connection) or PC6 Nei Guan if there is nausea. • Elbow pain: 22.04-22.05 Ling Gu/Da Bai. • Frozen Shoulder: 22.04-22.05 Ling Gu/Da Bai, 002 Fen Bai.
